Originally designed by Gillis Lundgren for IKEA in the 1970s, this piece has been reworked by Respect Your Elders using a sugar brown check textile, paired with a honey-coloured durable fabric. The two fabrics have been beautifully layered over one another as an ode to 1970s design sensibility — where pattern, warmth, and tactility shaped the domestic interior. Both materials are reinforced with ripstop construction to ensure longevity while remaining true to the original material logic.
The intervention is intentionally restrained — preserving the design integrity of Lundgren’s early work. The introduction of the check fabric acts as a quiet continuation of the piece’s original language, rather than a departure from it.
The internal foam has been renewed to restore comfort and structure, while the large, sturdy frame has been refinished in polished chrome, maintaining its original form and proportion.
The armrests are fixed, fully integrated into the structure, reinforcing the clarity and continuity of the design.
The chrome is beautiful and flawless.
While no original maker’s marks remain, the construction, proportions, and detailing are consistent with the period and attributed design.
